SUMMARY:Scrum Troubleshooting
DESCRIPTION:This session will dig into any and all issues\, challenges\, or concerns you have with Scrum. Scrum events\, jobs within scrum\, the ‘new’ commitments\, artifacts\, or backlog refinement. We will have some common issues to get started\, if we need them\, however\, it would be ideal (and perhaps more useful) if you brought your issues and challenges. In addition to the challenges themselves\, we will focus on doing this using a few basic steps that you can use yourself. What kinds of issues do you have with Scrum? Work not getting completed in a sprint? No one cares about the daily scrum or retro? Something “more complicated”? Whatever it is\, bring it and we will work with you to sort out some next steps you can take!

SUMMARY:Certified ScrumMaster® [CSM] Training - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Learn the core elements of Scrum and the ScrumMaster role and how Scrum helps teams thrive so they can deliver for customers.\n\n\nCertified ScrumMaster® Training \nA ScrumMaster is someone who works to help the Scrum Team and the organization continuously improve. This work includes helping to remove organizational impediments that slow the team down\, or making the impediments transparent (everyone agrees they are okay going slower). They are not a project manager\, given they are not accountable for delivery of a project. Instead they are accountable to help everyone on the team improve and help create an environment and structure where they can thrive and deliver for customers. \nStudents will work on engaging exercises and a simulation (to keep things fun and interesting) throughout the class. These activities provide opportunities to think and experience Scrum concepts by working on them in small groups. Throughout the course\, we will dig into real life situations and tackle tough questions. Our approach is reality based\, and we expect students to push back and challenge concepts that don’t work in their organization. Expect to work in various groups and be engaged throughout the course. We never use slides – so if you planned for a nap\, this is the wrong class for you. \nWhat is Scrum?\nScrum is an agile framework used to get work done. Scrum works in a variety of situations\, but it thrives when either the work or the environment is complex and not as predicable as we would like. Scrum focuses on delivering incrementally in small chunks\, to allow us to learn more and adapt\, rather than just continuing to deliver things that are no longer needed or perhaps never were. \nScrum is based on the principles of inspection\, adaptation\, and transparency. These three principles are the foundation to being success in the face of complexity. Transparency allows people to see issues\, challenges\, and places that can be improved. Inspection and adaptation focus on continuous learning and improvement. Scrum consists of a number of events\, artifacts\, jobs to be done\, and practices. You can read more about Scrum in the Scrum Guide\, which is free to read or download. \nWho Should Attend\nThis course should be attended by anyone who wants a foundational knowledge of scrum and what scrum is in practice. \n\nScrumMasters\, Agile Coaches\, Product Owners\nScrum team members\, agile team members\nArchitects\, business analysts\, database administrators\, developers\, operations and support\, quality assurance testers\, usability specialists\, etc.\nManagers\, directors\, and others tasked with helping teams succeed with scrum and agile (very hard to do if you do not understand it)\nAnyone outside of software or IT: Our CSM class covers topics and examples that are applicable to those outside of software. We also offer training specifically geared to this group. See our Agile Beyond Software course for more information.\n\nWhat to Expect\nWe take training and learning seriously. We respect the investment of both time and money that you are making to advance your skills. As such\, we use the latest training approaches and techniques. We also bring energy and fun to ensure you have the best possible experience and learn as much as possible. In this course\, you can expect: \n\nBrain-friendly training to dramatically increase learning and retention (instructors are Certified Training from the Back of the Room Trainers).\nOpportunities throughout the course to focus on your real-world situations.\nIn-depth engagement with your instructors and fellow attendees. If you are looking for a dry lecture (we use zero slides)\, this class is NOT for you!\nInteractive\, fun\, and experiential learning — increasing safety and retention — laughing helps learning.\nChallenging work with others that focuses on your real organizational issues.\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nWhat is agile and why does it matter: Learn how to discuss agile and scrum with others in your organization and explain why agile is useful and in what contexts.\nDiscuss how complexity and empiricism impact our business decisions and impact our success.\nAnalyze agile principles and values as well as lean principles to understand which are most valuable to you and consider how you could apply them in real life.\nLearn the differences between doing agile practices and being an agile organization.\nPractice using scrum with a simulation where you work as a small team (3-6 people) to create a product.\nLearn the ins-and-outs of scrum events (sprint\, sprint planning\, daily scrum\, sprint review\, sprint retrospective).\nLearn how scrum artifacts and supporting practices help you be successful as well as tips and tricks for doing them well (product backlog\, sprint backlog\, sprint goal\, product goal\, definition of done\, definition of ready\, product increment\, etc.).\nUnderstand what each of the three jobs (not titles) in scrum are\, how they work together\, what they are accountable for\, and what to avoid.\nExplore why scrum values mean little without focusing on the behaviors that support them.\nTrue leadership and servant leadership – what does it mean to lead?\nReality – we expect you to ask the tough questions. We expect you to bring up situations where scrum did not work for you.\nUncover the role of the ScrumMaster regarding impediments and how to first ask the team to solve issues then make the costs transparent!\nReview additional approaches such as facilitation and professional coaching to understand new ways to engage people and teams.\nDiscuss reality: We don’t tell you to “trust us” or include “agile is cool” as a reason to use agile. We EXPECT you to ask hard questions\, as long as you are open to digging into the answers. Scrum is NOT a silver-bullet\, nor is agile. They still require hard work.\n\nWho Should Attend\nThis course should be attended by anyone who wants a foundational knowledge of scrum and what scrum is in practice. See our Agile Beyond Software course for more information.\n\nDetails\nCourse Length: 4 1/2 day sessions (2 full days total) 2-days + pre-work \nLevel: Introductory to Intermediate (ask about more in-depth versions) \nPrerequisites\n\nAn interest in learning and discovering new ideas\nFor the CSM Certification\, see the Certification Requirements section\n\nCourse Credit\n\n16 PMI PDUs\n16 Scrum Alliance SEUs\nQualified to take the CSM Exam (exam fee is included in the course fee)\n\nCertification Requirements\nThe course meets the learning objectives for the Scrum Alliance Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) Certification Training. This class is one of the requirements to receive the CSM certification from Scrum Alliance. To qualify\, you must: \n\nComplete the class prework.\nAttend and participate in the entire CSM class.\nComplete and pass the CSM exam after completing the class. We will submit your name to Scrum Alliance® after completing the class and you can create a profile and take the exam at that time. We cover everything you need to pass the exam in the course.\n\nCourse Facilitator\nJake Calabrese\nJake is a coach\, trainer\, and coach-consultant working to help organizations meet the promise of agile by going beyond agile practices to address culture challenges and help teams and leaders reach and maintain high performance. He has unique expertise as an Organization & Relationship Systems Certified Coach (ORSCC)\, a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST)\, Certified Enterprise Coach (CEC)\, and Professional Certified Coach (PCC)\, and as a trainer and coach for Agile Companies (helping non-software organizations use agile). Jake created the AgileSafari cartoon series to introduce humor into the more challenging issues we have to tackle. Jake uses ideas from various areas of thinking such as: Lean\, professional coaching\, neuroscience\, psychology\, facilitation\, brain-based training\, improvisation\, agile\, kanban\, and scrum. Jake regularly speaks at local and national conferences including Mile High Agile\, Scrum Gathering\, and Agile Alliance Agile20xx conferences. \n\n\nCancellations and Transfers\nPlease email us to request a transfer or to cancel. Refunds will be provided with 30 days notice of cancellation. One-time transfer to a future class will be provided with 14 days notice\, for free. SUMMARY:Scrum vs. Kanban: What Does Your Doctor Recommend?
DESCRIPTION:This session is going to focus on the ongoing and persistent nonsense surrounding kanban and scrum (this IS the softer version). We will start by defining a few core aspects of kanban and scrum to clarify where these ideas are from. We then begin dismantling all the confusing\, incorrect\, sad\, frustrating\, and impediment-creating comparison charts surrounding scrum vs kanban. We will use one from a blog (which is laced with problems to boot) and show you an ACTUAL Scrum vs Kanban comparison that does not make me sad. PLEASE have images ready of any comparisons you have seen or used. If you don’t like them or like them – have the images to paste into Miro. We will work through as many as we can. What we hope is that (1) you will have a much clearer idea of the differences and similarities\, (2) you will see some of the patterns people use to make these comparisons worse so you can see them faster\, and (3)\, YOU can point out areas that are wrong or need adjustments with the new comparison I’ll show you (so I can improve it).

SUMMARY:Mistakes Are Made: Agile Throughout the Organization (Beyond IT)
DESCRIPTION:People are using agile throughout the organization. They have been for a long time. Agile has not been “only software” or “only IT” for a long time. Arguably (by me) if you go back to lean\, maybe never. While people have been using it for years there is still a ton of confusion around how to do it well and what might have to change. For people who have been doing it\, they are often unsure if they are doing it well. Ironically\, many of the same issues people who are using it in software have. Mistakes are made all the time when attempting to use agile throughout the organization\, and while we love mistakes! We also know there are some we can avoid or even realize are not really mistakes after all! This session will cover a revised version of the agile manifesto (not official)\, what agile is really about\, and a few core aspects of agile (scrum or kanban) in practice and how they may be even more challenging outside of software (certainly not impossible).

SUMMARY:Navigating Tough Conversations with Advocacy and Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Difficult conversations become more difficult when you are vague about your perspective and when you aren’t curious about the other person’s. You want to express your views clearly and without being rigid – while at the same time staying connected to the other person. In this session\, we’ll explore the idea of approaching tough conversations as opportunities for mutual learning by focusing on two questions: “What do I need them to learn from me?” and “What do I need to learn from them?”

SUMMARY:The Simple and Hard Parts of Agile-Lean Organizations
DESCRIPTION:Describing an organization that operates with agility is simple. A few key elements encapsulate what it means to work this way. (Although people often make it more complicated than it needs to be!) We will review the core elements and align on those. Of course\, actually working this way is hard. This session explores some of the challenges that persist even after an organization decides it wants to incorporate these core elements\, particularly around establishing an environment where people voice their opinions\, point out problems\, and discuss mistakes.

SUMMARY:Get Ready for Tough Conversations by Taking Responsibility
DESCRIPTION:In many difficult conversations\, there’s something about you that you’re afraid the other person will bring up. Worse\, they might be thinking about it and never mention it. In this first session in a series about tough conversations\, we will explore how to make these situations more productive by doing an accountability audit\, taking responsibility for your contribution to the problem\, and naming the issue in a way that helps everyone move forward.

SUMMARY:What Does A Manager Do?
DESCRIPTION:Do you know what your manager’s job is? Plenty has been written about what managers “should” do. What being a manager actually means\, however\, varies wildly between organizations. If you’ve ever wanted to “manage up” more effectively\, you need to understand your manager. In this session\, we’ll examine managers’ varied roles through the lenses of expectations\, information\, and authority.

SUMMARY:Agile Leadership: Leading Amazing Teams [LAT] - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Gain critical professional coaching tools\, techniques\, skills\, and ideas that help leaders enable high performing teams.\n\n\nAgile Leadership — Leading Amazing Teams for Breakthrough Results\nLeaders today face shifting challenges when helping teams succeed in our complex world. With increasing speed\, change\, and unknowns\, leaders can’t rely on ‘knowing everything’ — there is too much happening. While many leaders realize this\, acting on it to create an environment where teams can thrive and deliver is not simple. Leaders need to bring new and deeper levels of skill and engagement to meet these challenges. \nHigh-performance is more than a catchphrase\, it is a state where teams are self-organizing to solve problems and deliver value to customers. Self-organizing and self-managing are not the same. The process of helping teams reach and maintain high-performance state varies from team to team and organization to organization\, however\, the foundational skills leaders need do not change. \nLeadership – leading to create real empowered high-performance teams. While we want teams to solve many of their own challenges\, leaders play a critical part in this process by helping teams continue to improve and develop. Great leaders engage with people and teams to address issues like conflict head-on\, helping teams find ways to gain from conflict and improve. They don’t have the luxury of telling teams “you are empowered” and walking away – they must do ‘just enough’ to help teams thrive. This requires leaders to have the awareness and protocols in place to know when they might be limiting the team. Agile Leadership — Leading Amazing Teams brings critical tools\, techniques\, skills\, and ideas from professional coaching\, brain-based training\, neuroscience\, leadership\, change management\, and much more to help leaders succeed. \nWhat to Expect\nWe take training and learning seriously and take your decision to spend time advancing your skills and improving yourself seriously. SUMMARY:Doing Agile Wrong - How Can You Tell - A Checklist for Testing Yourself!
DESCRIPTION:(This is the full session from Agile 2022). What exactly are the “rules” when it comes to agile or scrum? There are many people out there\, including perhaps you\, who tells people they are breaking rules. For most of us\, we have been told we are break rules as well. \nWhat kind of ‘rules’?  Any of them\, such as: no product owner\, one person as the product owner and scrum master\, one day sprints\, two daily standups\, using projects or project managers with agile\, using velocity as a metric\, have a manager on a team\, having no wip limit in kanban\, and so many more.   \nAre these allowed? Who makes the rules? Why do people get so mad when you break them? And are you allowed to break them?  Come to this session and get a checklist of 10 questions to help you know when breaking the rules is okay and when its not (and yes\, the irony of this is not missed!).

SUMMARY:What To Do When People are Looking At the Same Challenge As If They Are From Different Planets
DESCRIPTION:We often see scenarios\, challenges\, and issues from very different perspectives. Sometimes it even appears we are coming from a different planet or a different land. We will explore the topic of “What does Agility/Agile Success look like in organizations of different sizes and industries.” We will use a tool from the professional coaching space to gain new insights and ideas from everyone in the session. Building on these we will look at how we can create shared perspectives from seemingly very different views. Based on your understanding of the tool\, you will have a chance to explore a challenge you have today and map out some next steps to use to explore the challenge with the others involved.

SUMMARY:What Enables High-Performing Teams?
DESCRIPTION:You can’t force teams to become high-performing. There’s no magic wand to wave to make teams reach their potential. You can\, however\, create the conditions that make it most likely that teams will perform at a high level. In this session\, we’ll examine what defines “high performance” for a team. We’ll explore research around team performance and what appear to be the essential conditions for cultivating high-performing teams.

SUMMARY:Why Believing in People as a Leader is Harder and Trickier Than It Appears
DESCRIPTION:One of the most important aspects of being a leader or coach is believing in the people you are helping. A frame for doing this is to know that they are creative and intelligent. While the concept is simple\, in practice it can be far more challenging because truly believing people are creative and intelligent goes far beyond simply saying it. We don’t simply “believe in people” and we are done. \nThis session will dive into the concept itself\, what it means at many levels\, and how the idea takes continuous learning over time to continue to “get it” at new levels. Additionally\, we will explore what happens when leaders think they believe in people but actually don’t. This can be one of the most challenging situations because the leaders truly believe they are helping people. Instead\, they may be pushing people to an unsafe space and/or manipulating them. Expect to explore all these concepts and apply them to your reality. We will consider options that can help you see where you are\, look for new levels of depth\, and avoid some of the worst-case scenarios.

SUMMARY:Prioritize Impediments with this One Weird Trick! (Plus Bonus Brainstorming Technique)
DESCRIPTION:An impediment is anything that is constraining your ability to achieve your goal. Continuous improvement requires you to identify these obstacles to success – and then do something about them. Staring at a long list of impediments can be overwhelming. In this session\, we’ll practice a simple technique for deciding which impediments to address first. We’ll also introduce a method for identifying impediments that can help you notice constraints you hadn’t before.

SUMMARY:Leadership & The 5 Levels of Listening (You Won't Believe #5!)
DESCRIPTION:Leaders know that listing is one of the cornerstones of leadership. We also tend to all struggle with it at times (or a lot!). Listening is critical to creating a space where others can step up and thrive. It is key to shifting from an “expert” or “solutions” leader. One annoying thing about listening is that you can always get better – you are never quite there! Many of you have heard of the “3 Levels of Listening”. Internal\, Focused\, and Global (we cover in Leading Amazing Teams). We have a recent blog post on “Global Listing While Remote” that talks about each one (if you are unfamiliar or want a refresher). \nThese three levels\, popularized by Co-active coaching are not just a cornerstone to leadership but also to professional coaching and facilitation. We will explain these 3 levels and run through some exercises to understand them more in a leadership context. Building on these 3\, we will introduce 3 additional levels from Shambhala Buddhism (non-secular). We will merge the 6 into 5 Levels of Listening and work through some exercises and explore how you might use and practice the levels more intentionally as a leader (regardless of your title). \nExpect some to engage in discussions together and with us.  I’ll have a long-time friend\, collaborator\, and brilliant professional coach/developer (he might reverse those) with me for this session as well. I’m not totally sure yet if we agree or not on the 5.

SUMMARY:Busting Assumptions - A Practical Approach to Getting Out of Your Own Way
DESCRIPTION:We make assumptions. It keeps us safe. Or at least it has. Any more these assumptions often hold us back. While it is easy to say\, “stop assuming”\, I have yet to see that work for anyone. Often our assumptions are nonconscious. This concept sprouted from a coaching session I did many years back where we had two camps of people who did not agree but were not seeing all the perspectives. \nBring 1 or more problems you have with others in your organization (people\, teams\, etc.) and we will let you try to bust any assumptions and come up with next steps. We include a version of this in our Agile Facilitation/A-CSM class\, however this is a bit different.  This new version includes a more formal step-by-step process to assess any problem you have.  These steps should make it easier to get started with\, use\, and explain to others.

SUMMARY:Five Lenses & Levers of Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Leadership is a social process that enables individuals to work together as a cohesive group to produce collective results – results they could not achieve working as individuals. Leadership is not the exclusive domain of those “leaders” appointed by the organization. This session introduces five ways to analyze a situation where a group would benefit from more leadership and five corresponding areas for action regardless of your role in the group. Bring a challenging situation you are dealing with and discover what options for action you have.

SUMMARY:Certified Scrum Product Owner [CSPO®] Training
DESCRIPTION:Learn the how the Scrum Product Owner (Scrum’s version of a Product Manager) engages with stakeholders & helps the Scrum Team deliver value.\n\n\nCertified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO®) Training\nThe product owner\, in scrum\, is accountable for maximizing the value for that product\, through the work of the scrum team. The product owner is scrum’s name for a product manager. The product owner engages with customers\, other stakeholders\, and the scrum team to create a product backlog and to prioritize the work in the product backlog. The scrum product owner’s approach to doing this work differs in a few key ways from older\, less flexible approaches. \nSpecifically\, the product owner: \n\nclearly articulates and communicates the product vision or goal. The scrum team\, which includes the people building the product or service\, understand what they are building and why.\nprioritizes the backlog by ordering all items against each other. There is not two “#1s” or ten. The backlog items are ordered as 1\, 2\, 3\, 4\, 5\, … 40 … and so on. They make decisions about what is more or less important.\ncreates transparency around the product backlog and the product backlog items\, so that it is visible and available to everyone involved.\n\nWhile these ideas are often what people aim for or espouse to\, the scrum product owner does them. Without transparency of work\, clear decisions on priorities\, and clarity of goal\, we can’t expect teams to be engaged and deliver. The scrum product owner understands this and is accountable to provide these to the scrum team and organization. \nThroughout the course\, you will have an opportunity to engage in practical\, reality-based work with small groups. Explore what the product owner is accountable for in the scrum framework\, learn new ways to engage customers to understand what they truly need\, and create product backlog items and refine them. You will have the opportunity to dig into the tough questions about project vs product thinking and create dialogue in your organization about the problem of too much work in process. \n\n\nWhat is Scrum?\nScrum is an agile framework used to get work done. \n\n\nWho Should Attend\nThis course should be attended by anyone who wants to understand what the product owner role is and how the product owner does their job. \n\nProduct Owners\, Product Managers\, Business Analysts\, QA Testers\nAgile Coaches\, Scrum Masters \nScrum team members\, agile team members\nManagers\, directors\, and others tasked with helping teams succeed with scrum and agile (very hard to do if you do not understand it)\nAnyone outside of software or IT: Our product owner training covers topics and examples that are applicable to those outside of software. We respect the investment of both time and money that you are making to advance your skills. As such\, we use the latest training approaches and techniques. We also bring energy and fun to ensure you have the best possible experience and learn as much as possible. SUMMARY:What's so Trendy About Agile Transformations That Everyone Goes Wild Over Them?
DESCRIPTION:We will be exploring the idea of agile transformations throughout this session. I”ll be doing some informal polling at Agile 2022 the week prior and will be looking for information from you. What is so trendy? What is the hope and the dream? We will start off by asking you (and we have one as well) what “agile transformation” means to you. Have you been part of one? How did it go? Where did you go? What questions do you have about agile transformations? \nWe will be looking at what they are supposed to be\, what they sometimes are\, why people embark on them\, and are hey the best option. It is easy to just say yes do them or no don’t. But the more valuable approach is likely more about the why. Why do you want to do one or not want to do one?

SUMMARY:Bring Me A Rock: How Delegation Goes Wrong (and What To Do About It)
DESCRIPTION:Delegation is a skill. It requires being clear about what you need without being overly specific about how that need must be satisfied. This session explores common ways delegation go wrong and what to do about it – both from the perspective of the person delegating and the person being delegated to.
