Agile Estimating – Do you understand it well enough to teach it? (Part 1)

Tuesday, June 21, 2022 @ 12:00 pm — 1:00pm (MDT)

What is it? Do you know what relative estimating, t-shirt sizing, and fibinnoci mean and why to use them? If you don’t, come to this session! If you do, do you know them well enough to teach them to others? No, or not sure? Come to this session. This session is part 1 of a series. Additional sessions will build on the concepts from the prior session and will cover additional estimation techniques, estimation factors, and forecasting in agile.

The basics of relative estimating are fairly well known and documented. That said, we find that there are two common challenges. One is that there are gaps in some of the knowledge or the information was confusing. The second is that while the person knows what terms like relative estimating, t-shirt sizing, and fibinnoci mean, they hesitate or struggle to teach these concepts to others. In this session, we will start by covering all these basic agile estimating core concepts, and walk-through an exercise to illustrate how relative estimatiom works. During this process we will explain the basics of two estimation techniques, affinity and table-top estimation. Finally, we will spend a bit of time asking some questions related to how you might explain these concepts to others to practice owning the concepts enough to teach them.

Please note: All of our Learning Labs are interactive sessions using Zoom and Miro. They are not just us talking to a slideshow. We invite all participants to collaborate on a virtual whiteboard (Miro) and engage in conversations with us and each other. While you are welcome to join in audio-only mode, it will be a challenge to participate, and you may not get much out of the session. Because these sessions are interactive, we do not record them. If you are not familiar with Miro, you can learn more at academy.miro.com.
